Thought for a while there that you’ld been shipwrecked on a deserted island somewhere with Gilligan…
Yeah, I am really sorry about that. Trust me, the hiatus was not planned…
Actually, what happened to Galileo wasn’t due to him saying the earth revolved around the sun, but due to the fact that he made enemies among the scholarly set—- and because he was a prat.
What he actually observed was that there were moons orbiting Jupiter, which contradicted the Church’s doctrine that the Earth was the center of everything.
Though putting the Pope’s arguments for an earth centered universe in the mouth of a character named “Simplico” (Simpleton) in his “Dialog” book may have been less than prudent.
Hmm. I have to disagree with this. If religion is true (and I believe it is) then analytical thinking should strengthen it.
Should, and in some cases, does. However, most places where analytical thinking is taught are also places where people are indoctrinated into materialism. If, just as you are learning to think analytically, you are also being told over and over that there is no God or gods, is it any surprise that you come to doubt the supernatural?
Also, if someone in the scientific community *did* have such an experience, do you really think he would go telling it to a radio announcer? At most, it would become the subject of a scientific paper, which would then be forgotten. Scientists do not appeal directly to public opinion. Any so-called scientist who is trying to sell the public on something that has not been proven scientifically has abandoned research ethics and is a joke.
